Decision making can be challenging with hundreds of thousands of chemicals on the global market.

There are around 40,000 industrial chemicals on the Australian inventory and as much as 350,000 in use globally. The sheer size of these numbers yet sparse information sources has made environmental risk management an ongoing challenge. In this talk Dr Daniel Weber will introduce ARChIE, a general-purpose collaborative web application that regulators, policy makers and assessors can use to aggregate large volumes of chemicals data, screen for risks, and prioritise effort. In the realm of contaminated sites assessment, ARChIE’s unique analytical capabilities, including cheminformatics and list-based search, can be powerful for tracing polluting chemicals back to their industrial and commercial sources.

Dr Daniel Weber is a Scientific Programmer and Cheminformatics Specialist in the Chemicals Science and Capability Section of the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW). Daniel is developing new and innovative scientific tools to prioritise regulatory efforts in chemicals risk management and deliver on emerging government priorities.
