ON DEMAND - Contaminated Land Scenarios – Assessing Beyond the NEPM

ON DEMAND - Contaminated Land Scenarios – Assessing Beyond the NEPM

This event will consist of 2 presentations.

Nick will discuss landfill gas, fire, and explosive risk. His presentation will consist of an assessment of ground gases associated with operating or closed landfills beyond the scope of the NEPM. States and territories generally have their own legislation and guidance covering the landfill licencing, best practise management and assessment of risk for surrounding properties. Risks associated with landfill gas present a unique challenge, acute hazards can result in catastrophic consequences, and may be subject to temporal events not captured in routine periodic monitoring. The 1986 Loscoe incident in the UK, demonstrates the severity of LFG risk for land surrounding landfills and provided many lessons learned that helped shape today’s guidance.

When investigation sites are impacted by radioactive substances including naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), the NEPM recommends the use of general principles of site assessment along with specialised forms of assessment. Kate will outline specialised forms of assessment from the perspective of a site contamination practitioner in Queensland including examples of when NORM needs to be investigated, conceptual site models including additional exposure pathways, investigation methods, Queensland legislation and guidance, and safety precautions.

This event will be held as a live webinar.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Nick Woodford
Senior Associate Risk Assessor

Tetra Tech Coffey

Nick joined Coffey in 2010 and works as a risk assessor, project manager and provides expert advice as part of Coffey’s Environmental Audit team.  Nick has over fifteen years’ experience, predominantly focussed on vapour intrusion assessments and has conducted a multitude of vapour intrusion risk assessments on sites with petroleum and chlorinated solvent impact.  Nick’s experience in vapour transport and risk assessment has extended into assessing sites affected by landfill gas.  He has planned and delivered landfill gas sampling events and landfill gas risk assessments.  Nick has ongoing involvement in many projects with the design, implementation, and validation of vapour intrusion management measures.  Nick’s experience in post closure landfills includes assisting in the delivery of a Statement of Environmental Audit allowing the re-development of a former solid inert landfill site for residential housing, one of the first such developments to be approved in Victoria since the Cranbourne landfill gas issue in 2008.
