Have your input in identifying current issues with EPA Victoria’s soil sampling guidance IWRG702 and soil sampling design and approaches that should be considered in an updated guidance.

The webinar seeks to socialize the review of IWRG702 – Soil Sampling and seeks feedback on identified solutions, possible options, and other areas that should be investigated as part of the review.

Victoria is evolving – with millions of tonnes of spoil expected to be generated over the coming years, the need to efficiently and effectively sample for potential contaminants in soil is becoming imperative. To help industry keep up with this forecasted increase, EPA Victoria is updating its soil sampling guidance to ensure that Victoria’s environment and communities are protected from harm through effective sampling of waste soils. In this initial step in the management of waste soils, EPA is keen to hear from you as to the types of practices and what considerations should be included in the updated guidance.

The updated guidance will seek to address soil sampling for the purposes of waste classification for projects of increasing size and complexity – ranging from small projects to major infrastructure projects. As part of the update, greater advice will be provided for sampling depth, sampling of linear projects, hot spot delineation, heterogeneous soils, and more. Key concepts included in the update are the concept of a decision unit when sampling, greater advice on stratification of linear projects, and the calculation of bespoke sampling frequencies.

Ryan Chan will present a synopsis of key issues that have been identified with existing soil sampling methodologies, and ways the updated guidance is considering addressing such issues. Following the presentation, we will host a discussion time to request participants’ input on the material presented. Ryan is a Policy Officer with the Policy and Regulation Branch of EPA Victoria. He brings a background in compliance and environmental chemistry and holds a Master of Environment and Sustainability.
