The Environmental Laboratory Industry Group (ELIG) was established in 2002 by David Burns and David Springer to unify the environmental laboratory sector, promote best practices, and provide a collective voice in regulatory and technical discussions.
Created to address the need for industry-wide collaboration on technical standards, regulatory compliance, and laboratory quality assurance, its members included both commercial and government laboratories engaged in environmental NATA testing of soil, water and air. The group has contributed to national guidelines, including the NEPM B3, where ELIG members helped shape laboratory analysis protocols for contaminated soils.
Over the years, ELIG has played a significant role in:
- Developing and reviewing environmental testing standards
- Representing laboratories on Australian Standards and NEPM committees
- Providing guidance on sample handling and preservation practices
- Promoting NATA accreditation
- Issued recommendations on sample temperature control during transport
In recent years, ELIG experienced a period of dormancy. However, it was reinvigorated in 2024, signalling a renewed commitment to industry collaboration and advocacy.
In 2025 it was unanimously decided that ELIG would join ALGA as a Specialist Interest Group, under the name of ELSIG (Environmental Laboratories Specialist Industry Group). This has been a great opportunity to expand our geographic reach, with committee members from across Australia (WA,SA,QLD,NSW, VIC) and New Zealand.
