Risk Assessment Special Interest Group Wrap Up

Written by Carolyn Brumley CEnvP and Naomi Cooper CEnvP (FACTRA)

The highlights of the Risk Assessment SIG this year have been the productive year we’ve had and the involvement of all members in multiple events. Events organised by the RA SIG include a Human Health Risk Assessment Webinar with members Carolyn Brumley and Gemma Williams presenting (October 2024), an Ecological Risk Assessment Webinar with members Kirsten Broadgate, Naomi Cooper and Gemma Williams presenting (February 2025) and a PFAS Webinar organised by RA SIG members Stephen Cambridge, Matt Taylor and Ken Keifer (May 2025).

Other events our team were involved in included a Victoria Branch Demystifying Risk Assessment discussion (Gemma Williams – July 2024). Ana Serra chaired and Anand Chandra presented on Risk Assessment at the NSW Local Government Contaminated Land Forum in December. At the ALGA NZ Conference, Victoria Lazenby was a keynote speaker and gave training. Carolyn and Victoria also presented at RemTech Europe in September 2024.

Victoria, Ken and Matt were involved in a vapour intrusion / ground gas symposium in March 2025 and John Russell prepared information for the E-chronicle on soil as a resource (April 2025).

Marcus Herrmann presented at an in-person Auckland event in May 2025 on investigation and regulatory consultation approaches for a former landfill.

What are you most excited about in the new financial year (1 July  2025 – 30 June 2026)

We have a number of exciting events planned for 2025 including a webinar (or two) on risk assessment and climate change, an important issue for multiple industry sectors. We are also in the planning stages for a 2-day risk assessment training course for mid-level professionals, as well as potentially a Risk Assessment Symposium.
