Team Leader Asbestos – Christchurch
Hill Labs
How did you come to work in the sector and what drives you to stay?
I started my career in the asbestos industry in 2013 as a lab and field technician during the post-Christchurch earthquake rebuild, after earning my BSc in Geology and Geography from the University of Canterbury. After managing a local laboratory for 4 years, I establised my own laboratory in 2018 for asbestos and contaminated land analysis. What drives me to stay in the asbestos industry is a combination of my passion for continuous learning, my commitment to knowledge sharing, and my desire to connect with others. I genuinely enjoy exploring the complexities of asbestos and the science behind it, which keeps me engaged and motivated.
Could you tell us about your role and what you find most rewarding about working at Hill Labs?
I joined Hill Labs as the Christchurch Asbestos Team Leader in May, following the acquisition of my company’s asbestos assets earlier this year. My position is quite dynamic, blending responsibilities in asbestos business development with my duties as a team leader. The most rewarding aspect of my work here is undoubtedly the people. I’m fortunate to be part of a supportive team that truly cares about their work and the impact we make.
Are there any current projects you’re involved in that you’d like to share with our members?
Currently, I don’t have any specific projects to highlight. After selling my business earlier this year, I’ve shifted my focus towards regaining balance between work and family. This change has allowed me to spend more quality time with my daughter, while also participating more actively in ALGA events and meetings, particularly within the asbestos and women in contaminated land special interest groups, as well as the Christchurch ALGA branch committee.
What is one essential item you cannot live without, and why is it important to you?
If I had to choose, I can’t narrow it down to just one essential item—coffee and music are both vital to my daily life. Coffee is my fuel; without it, I struggle to find my rhythm. On the other hand, music is my constant companion. Whether I’m working, relaxing, or even thinking about asbestos (yes, I do that too!), you’ll find me singing away. Together, coffee and music keep me energised and uplifted, making life so much more enjoyable!
