Groundwater Fate and Transport Special Interest Group Wrap Up

Written by Dr Chris Duesterberg (Nation Partners)

What has been the highlight of your Branch/SIG this year?

It was another great year for the Groundwater Fate and Transport SIG, with most of our long-term members continuing to go above and beyond in their efforts and commitments. Some highlights include the Groundwater and Mining Symposium held in Perth in February 2025, which received excellent reviews from attendees and speakers alike, and the Introduction to Contaminant Hydrogeology course co-hosted by ALGA and the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) in March 2025. Both the symposium and course were the fruition of some great ideas and many volunteer hours from our SIG members, who continue to bring incredible enthusiasm to the SIG and its various initiatives.

On a personal note, the highlight for me was the opportunity to continue working with an outstanding group of talented, capable and dedicated SIG members. Your efforts and enthusiasm make my job very easy, and it’s always enjoyable to connect at our SIG meetings.

What are you most excited about in the new financial year (1 July  2025 – 30 June 2026)

Looking forward I’m excited for the SIG to continue its momentum and energy. As one of ALGA’s longest running SIGs it’s great to see the interest and enthusiasm remains strong, with many returning members and huge interest from the industry to join. We are especially looking forward to the opportunity to meet together in person at ecoforum later this year, and planning has already commenced for our next technical symposium in the first half of 2026.
