What’s your exposure scenario? Exploring ASC NEPM Schedule B7 – Event has passed, recording now available

This event is now passed and available on-demand. Please register and you will receive a dedicated link to watch the webinar

Join us as we explore the exposure scenarios covered in the ASC NEPM and provide insights into the inclusion and exclusions that may change the way you apply the HILs at your sites.

The Health Investigation Levels (HILs) presented in the ASC NEPM provide benchmark soil concentrations that support preliminary evaluation of risk at contaminated sites.

The HILs are derived for four broad land use categories and are underpinned by generic assumptions about the environment, human behaviour, the physicochemical characteristics of contaminants and their fate and transport in soil.

The effective evaluation of risk using the HILs is predicated on the assumption that the conceptual site models (CSM) for the four broad land use categories apply to the CSM for the site that is being assessed. But what if this assumption is not accurate for some elements of the CSM?

This webinar will explore the CSMs that underpin the HILs and highlight the key inclusions and exclusions in the derivation process, and will use case studies to demonstrate how to navigate the linkage between the HIL CSM and your site CSM. The webinar will also cover what to do if there are gaps that need further consideration.

Who should attend:
Whilst the information presented will be useful for all contaminated land practitioners and land managers, this webinar will be aimed at early to mid-career professionals or those with limited understanding of the ASC NEPM.

Speakers

Gemma Williams Headshot

Gemma Williams

Nation Partners

As a human health and ecological risk practitioner with over 15 years experience in the contaminated land sector Gemma understands the importance of developing a robust conceptual site model for each site and evaluating the relevance of the HILs assumptions to that CSM.

Gemma’s experience spans across a wide range of land uses and contaminants. She has used her knowledge of the assumptions that underpin Tier 1 guideline values, including the HILs, to evaluate risks and develop site-specific screening values to support remediation planning.

Whilst she has considerable experience in the human health risk assessment space, Gemma is most passionate about assessment of ecological risks and ensuring that ecosystem composition and health is thoroughly considered in the ERA process.

Carolyn Brumley

Carolyn Brumley

Senior Principal Risk Assessor
Senversa

Dr Carolyn Brumley is a senior principal risk assessor at Senversa. She has over 27 years of experience in environmental consulting, regulation and research related to assessing the impacts of chemicals on human health and the environment. She has used the ASC NEPM and HILs to assess risks across a wide variety of sites and exposure scenarios, including scenarios not captured by the land use categories in the ASC NEPM.

Carolyn was previously the Deputy Chief Environmental Scientist and Manager of the Environmental Public Health Unit at the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria and was Acting Chief Environmental Scientist in 2021. Carolyn is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Toxicology and Risk Assessment (ACTRA) and is a current member of both the NSW and Victorian EPA Contaminated land Auditor appointment panels, as well as the National Advisory Committee on the Environmental Management of Industrial Chemicals.
