Portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) is a valuable tool in the toolbox for contaminated land professionals allowing for in-field screening of heavy metals. However, there are constraints with its use and handled poorly it can give inaccurate results.
This XRF 101 session offers the chance to hear the underlying theory on using a portable XRF, key considerations in calibrating and sample preparation and how to interpret and validate results.
Led by Dave Bull, a principal author of the MfE guide on Field use of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for investigation of contaminated soils, the session will mix theory, case studies and hands-on experience with the equipment to give an introductory session, as well as learning for more experienced operators, on fitting this method into site investigations.
The event will finish with networking and chance for questions and answers at a local brewery.

Miles is an environmental scientist with 13 years of experience in contaminated land and environmental management. This has included soil and water investigations, and designing and implementing management approaches to find sustainable solutions and meet regulatory compliance objectives.
He has worked on projects for a variety of contaminated site types including electrical substations, landfills, airports, gasworks, timber treatment, service stations, panel beaters, oil terminals and defence bases. Miles' notable project experience includes site-wide contamination management of complex large industrial sites, petroleum site management, assisting various private and governmental clients with NESCS requirements, site investigations for treaty settlements, technical advisor to government agencies and councils on PFAS, PFAS investigations for government and regional airports including developing sampling procedures and being a public liaison alongside other consultancies.

Miles will be joined by Dr Dave Bull, one of the authors of the recently released guidelines "Field use of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for investigation of contaminated soils" (MfE, 2024).
Dave is also a Certified Environmental Practitioner and a director at HAIL Environmental. He is a regular contributor the contaminated site industry and a director at WasteMINZ.
