Join the Wellington ALGA branch for a special lecture by Massey University’s Dr Nick Kim on arsenic and the need for change for New Zealand’s soil standard.
Nick is held in high esteem for his work on soil contaminants in New Zealand, with a sterling record of bringing key issues to national attention.
In this talk he presents a contemporary review of arsenic in New Zealand soils detailing six compelling reasons why the current National Environmental Standards need to change and the paths forward to allow this. This is essential background for anyone working with and assessing risk of contaminated soils.
For those who missed the ALGA New Zealand Land and Groundwater Conference in October this is a chance to catch one of the most well-received talks, while even those who made it up to Auckland will still benefit from the additional depth on the topic offering further insights.

My core skills revolve around applied analytical and environmental chemistry with focus areas including human and environmental health risk assessment, soil, air and water quality, environmental monitoring, natural resource management, and aspects of forensic chemistry.
These build on academic qualifications of a first-class BSc(Hons) and PhD in environmental chemistry (Canterbury), followed by post-qualification experience of 11 years as a chemistry lecturer at the University of Waikato, 10 years as a science advisor with Waikato Regional Council, and 12 years as a senior lecturer at Massey University in Wellington.
My role with the Waikato Regional Council was as a technical specialist in chemical contamination issues across the board (soil, land, water, sediments, air quality, etc.). I have contributed to New Zealand policy and legislation development in the areas of contaminated land, hazardous substances, air quality, and indoor contamination including methamphetamine, and have other experience that ranges broadly from on-scene assistance with hazardous substance incidents, to acting as an expert witness, serving as a hearings commissioner, and preparing briefings for government ministers.
I have written about 60 papers in refereed journals, articles, and book chapters, 13 stand-alone technical reports, made contributions to 11 national guidelines and standards, and undertaken many technical assessments.
