Wellington Branch Event – Groundwater Forum: Mapping and Protecting Aotearoa’s Groundwater

Groundwater can often be overlooked in many day-to-day contaminated land investigations but can be a critical pathway for contaminants to impact on human and environmental health. This forum through presenting on the approaches to assess and protect from groundwater contamination aims to remind us all that consideration of groundwater, and the effects of contamination should be front of mind.

Consideration of groundwater is more than just assessing whether a discharge consent is needed, it’s a key indicator of the health of the environment. Join us for three excellent presentations:

George Hampton
George will present drinking water quality, outlining the background to the 2021 Drinking Water Regulations, and how drinking water suppliers have been navigating how best to demonstrate compliance with their responsibilities with regard to the to the provision of supplying safe drinking water.

Magali Moreau
Magali will outline the current research questions and advances on groundwater capture zone delineation and aquifer mapping

Oliver ter Ellen
Oliver will present on the work the EPA are undertaking to produce a Chemical Map of Aotearoa that aims to track chemical storage and dispersive use with a view for protecting from groundwater contamination.

She is currently leading work with Waikato Regional Council on addressing groundwater quality monitoring issues identified by the PCE in 2019. Aspects to be tackled includes representativeness of the environment and alignment between regional and national scale. She led the first regional survey for emerging contaminants in groundwater in 2019.

Oliver ter Ellen

Senior Advisor, Environmental Data and Monitoring
EPA

Oliver had a BSc in chemistry from Victoria University of Wellington, and has always had a particular interest in analytical chemistry.
Oliver has spent some time working in a commercial laboratory analysing food and environmental samples; mainly using triple quadrupole mass spectrometry as the detection method.
Since working at the Environmental Protection Authority – Te Mana Rauhī Taiao, Oliver has spent most of his time working in the Hazardous Substances Reassessments space. The EPA reviews approval status and rules of use for chemicals that are already being used in the country. This covers a vast number of chemicals that are used in very different ways.
Since working on the Chemical Map initiative – Oliver has been focussed on collating a fuller picture of chemical use and their effects in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The EPA are also becoming more involved in partnering with organisations to contribute to environmental monitoring in the country – encompassing both chemical and eDNA testing.
