Thinking about becoming an Environmental Auditor?
Environmental auditors play a critical role in providing independent oversight and expert judgement within the contaminated land sector. The role requires practitioners to navigate complex technical, regulatory, legal, and stakeholder challenges while maintaining objectivity and independence. For many experienced consultants, becoming an auditor represents a significant professional milestone, but the realities of the role are not always well understood.
This webinar will explore the practical realities of environmental auditing and the unique perspectives gained through the role. Drawing on the experiences of practising auditors, the discussion will examine the challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities associated with auditing, along with the skills and mindset required to succeed.
In this webinar, our speakers will explore:
The discussion will also provide insights into the professional and personal rewards of auditing, the demands of the role, and considerations for practitioners contemplating the upcoming national auditor application process.
This webinar will be particularly valuable for contaminated land and groundwater practitioners considering environmental auditing as a future career pathway, as well as professionals interested in gaining a better understanding of the auditor’s role within the industry.
This webinar will not focus on the accreditation pathway, which will be covered separately in ALGA’s webinar, “National Harmonised Auditor Accreditation Process for the Initial Accreditation of Site Contamination Auditors”, presented on 17 August 2026.

With more than 25 years in contaminated land, Stephan Pawelczyk has seen environmental auditing from almost every angle — as a consultant, regulator, applicant and now EPA-accredited Site Auditor.
His path included time in the NSW EPA’s Contaminated Sites Section before he made the decision to pursue auditor accreditation himself. That experience gives him a useful perspective on not just what the role requires, but what it actually feels like to make the transition.
Stephan is registered to conduct audits in NSW, ACT, NT and Tasmania and is a Certified Environmental Practitioner Site Contamination Specialist (CEnvP SC). A former ALGA board member, director and president, he now chairs ALGA’s Environmental Auditors Specialist Interest Group, with a strong focus on helping practitioners understand the pathway to accreditation and supporting greater consistency across the profession nationally.
A proud UTS alumnus, Stephan is also a mentor through the EIANZ mentoring program, a guest university lecturer and the voice behind the practical #askanauditor series on LinkedIn.

Louise is a Principal Environmental Scientist and Contaminated Site / Land Auditor (Qld, SA, Tas, Vic, NT) with Onterris, specialising in providing teams with technical insights, program timeframes, sharing lessons learnt and understandings on how contamination impacts the end value of assets. This has extended to educating team members, assisting with keeping contamination off the critical path and driving sustainable remediation.
Louise has project managed and provided technical input into a large range of contaminated land projects including Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) projects, Remediation Options Appraisals and baseline soil and groundwater quality. Also a keen learner, she has enjoyed further professional development beyond her initial degree and is a strong believer in providing a place where people can connect to others, to create a sense of community and encourages us to challenge ourselves with new ideas and information.
