Subsurface hydrocarbon remediation projects are often managed under significant uncertainty, particularly at excavation boundaries where decisions must balance cost, compliance and risk. Traditional laboratory‑based sampling provides high‑confidence data but is slow and spatially sparse, frequently leading to conservative excavation or costly under‑excavation and rework.
In this webinar, our speaker will present a practical evaluation of how rapid, field‑based total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) measurement using mid‑infrared (MIR) spectroscopy can improve excavation outcomes. Drawing on the RemScan rapid classification approach and recent Monte Carlo simulation studies, the session will examine how sampling density, vertical resolution and classification uncertainty influence remediation decision‑making.
In this webinar, our speaker will explore:
The webinar will also consider alignment with current regulatory frameworks for contaminated land assessment and excavation validation, particularly in relation to TPH thresholds.
This webinar will be particularly valuable for environmental consultants, remediation contractors, regulators and project managers seeking practical ways to reduce uncertainty and deliver more efficient remediation projects. A live question‑and‑answer session will follow the presentation, and the webinar will be recorded.

Dr Sean Manning is a technical strategist and scientist specialising in soil analysis, spectroscopy, and environmental measurement technologies. He has a background in applied physics and was involved in the development of advanced optical materials at the University of Adelaide before moving into commercial technology development.
Sean is the driving force behind the application of mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy to soil analysis through the RemScan platform, and currently leads the integration of field-based measurement technologies into GXLab’s data and decision systems. His work focuses on bridging the gap between high-quality measurement and real-world operational decisions, particularly in remediation, carbon, and environmental monitoring.
He has worked across academia, industry, and commercialisation, and brings a practical, data-driven perspective to improving how environmental projects are executed in the field.
