Webinar – Precision in Practice: The Path from Sample Submission to Results

An Environmental Laboratories SIG Initiative

What really happens to environmental samples once they leave the field is often poorly understood, yet these early stages are critical to data quality, compliance, and defensibility. Decisions made during sampling, packaging, transport, and documentation can significantly influence laboratory outcomes, turnaround times, and ultimately project decisions.

This webinar will take delegates behind the laboratory doors to follow the complete journey of a sample – from submission and chain of custody through preparation, analysis, quality control, and final reporting. Drawing on operational experience from a high‑throughput laboratory environment, the session connects field practices with laboratory processes to show how everyday decisions can have measurable impacts on results.

Our speakers will explore:

  • How sampling, container selection, preservation, and transport decisions directly influence analytical results and data defensibility
  • Common submission and documentation issues that cause delays, rework, or non‑compliance
  • The importance of correct containers, cooling methods, preservation techniques, and holding times
  • What laboratories can—and cannot—do under accreditation and quality system requirements
  • How laboratories manage traceability, contamination risk, and data integrity in routine operations
  • The link between sampling practices and uncertainty in laboratory measurements
  • Practical ways to improve collaboration between field teams and laboratories

Real‑world examples of sample handling challenges and contamination scenarios will be presented to illustrate how issues arise – and, importantly, how they can be prevented through simple, practical improvements.

This webinar will be particularly valuable for consultants, contractors, regulators, and laboratory professionals working in the environmental and contaminated land sector who want to strengthen the reliability of their data and gain a clearer understanding of the full pathway from sample submission to final results.
