Webinar – Australia’s Hidden PFAS Footprint: What Historical Land Use Reveals

In 2024, Lotsearch identified more than 260,000 known and potentially contaminated sites across Australia through analysis of over a decade of environmental records and historical land-use data. More recently, this dataset was re-examined to better understand the potential scale of PFAS contamination across these sites, providing new insight into one of the most significant emerging challenges facing contaminated land management in Australia.

The findings formed the basis of discussion at an executive roundtable hosted by Lotsearch earlier this year, bringing together industry leaders to consider the practical implications of PFAS contamination, including data gaps, risk identification, disclosure obligations, and the challenges associated with translating policy into practice.

In this webinar, our speakers will explore:

  • The methodology used to identify sites with potential PFAS contamination across Australia.
  • How historical land-use and environmental datasets were analysed to understand PFAS risk at a national scale.
  • Key findings from the research and what they reveal about the potential extent of PFAS-impacted sites.
  • The scale and implications of current data gaps for understanding PFAS risk.
  • Insights from Lotsearch’s executive roundtable, including key themes relating to risk, disclosure, and implementation challenges.
  • Important takeaways for regulators, practitioners, landowners, and other stakeholders managing PFAS-related risks.

The webinar will also provide an overview of the upcoming whitepaper, PFAS in Practice: Turning Policy into Action for Australia’s Contaminated Sites, which synthesises the research findings and roundtable discussions. The publication examines the intersection of policy, practice, and risk management, providing recommendations to support informed decision-making across government, industry, and the broader contaminated land sector.

This webinar will be particularly valuable for contaminated land practitioners, environmental consultants, regulators, legal professionals, property and infrastructure stakeholders, policymakers, and others involved in the assessment, management, and governance of PFAS-contaminated land. A live Q&A will follow, and the session will be recorded.
