Webinar – Asbestos in Soil – It’s a Different World but with Overlapping Governance

Perspectives for UK, European Union, Australia and New Zealand practitioners and regulators

The management of asbestos in soil varies across jurisdictions. In the United Kingdom, unlike Australia and New Zealand, most asbestos is anthropogenic (linked to historical use and disposal), resulting in widespread impacts across brownfield redevelopment sites. Practitioners must navigate planning, health and safety, and contaminated land frameworks to demonstrate that land is “safe” and “suitable for use,” often in complex settings involving multiple contaminants and varied soil and waste matrices.

Generic concentration limits have limited value in managing asbestos risk. Current approaches focus on exposure – particularly the potential for fibres to become airborne and inhaled. Assessing risks such as mesothelioma and lung cancer requires consideration of fibre type, site conditions, and disturbance scenarios, supported by epidemiological data, reflecting a shift towards exposure‑based, risk‑focused decision making.

In this webinar, our speaker will explore:

  • The origins and characteristics of asbestos contamination in UK soils and implications for brownfield redevelopment.
  • Regulatory drivers and how planning, health and safety, and contaminated land frameworks interact.
  • Limitations of generic asbestos criteria and the need for site‑specific assessment.
  • The influence of co‑contaminants and complex matrices on investigation and remediation.
  • Key factors controlling fibre release and airborne exposure.
  • Risk assessment approaches, including quantitative estimation of excess lifetime cancer risk.

Practical examples will demonstrate how site conditions and assessment approaches influence outcomes, and how to apply defensible, exposure‑based strategies for the redevelopment of asbestos‑impacted land.

This webinar will be particularly valuable for contaminated land practitioners, risk assessors, regulators, and consultants. A live Q&A will follow, and the session will be recorded.
