Tasmania Branch Event – Transforming Land and Water: A Showcase of Tasmanian Remediation Projects

Join us for Tasmania’s first ALGA event for 2026, where leading industry professionals will share insights into how contaminated land and water challenges are being addressed across the state.

This event will feature three real-world case studies that demonstrate the diversity and complexity of remediation in Tasmania. From managing a remote fuel spill on Flinders Island, to undertaking remediation within an active maritime environment at the Mersey Slip, and the complex clean-up

supporting future land use plans at Macquarie Point. These projects highlight how site conditions, environmental sensitivity, and intended redevelopment outcomes influence remediation approaches. Speakers will discuss the practical realities of project delivery – including challenges encountered, solutions developed, and lessons learned while working in varied and often constrained environments.

Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how applied remediation solutions are developed, refined, and successfully implemented in complex, real-world settings. The evening will conclude with a Q&A session, followed by drinks, nibbles, and networking opportunities to connect with like-minded professionals.

Speakers

Tim Coates

Tim Coates

Senior Environmental Scientist – Contamination Assessment and Remediation
GHD

Tim is a Senior Environmental Scientist at GHD, with 7 years’ experience in contaminated land management in Tasmania, and the broader Australian landscape. Tim started his early career in Tasmania working on small-scale baseline assessments, material categorisation, routine monitoring, and groundwater/ground-gas installations. He has since had the opportunity to work on large-scale commercial remediation projects, legacy infrastructure decommissioning roles in the oil and gas industry, and detailed assessments of modern contaminants with a focus on human-health risk. Tim has a keen interest in the implementation of sustainable solutions in remediation, particularly material re-use options that reduce or divert waste volumes intended for landfill endpoints

Erika Heiden

Erika’s qualifications are in Environmental Science – Physical Geography and Environmental Chemistry with extensive experience in contaminated site assessment, sediment quality, remediation, waste management and due diligence.

Erika has managed a wide variety of environmental projects, from small to large scale detailed site assessments and remediation projects. She has a special interest in sediment quality and has completed assessments for dredging and ocean disposal applications in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania including implementation of the tiered sediment assessment framework for best ecological outcomes.

Robert Crowe

Associate Director – Environment
AECOM

Robert is an Associate Director – Environment at AECOM Australia with 18 years of professional experience in assessment, remediation, and contamination management. His experience includes a range of sites and contamination, most typically involving large industrial or former industrial sites with lengthy operational histories and legacy impacts from decades of use.

Since 2019, Robert has been the AECOM’s project manager and remediation adviser for environmental work at the Macquarie Point site in Hobart. Macquarie Point has a long history of commercial and industrial use since European settlement, including extensive land reclamation, military use, rail and freight handling and maintenance, bulk fuel storage, gasworks, and even Dark MOFO. The assessment and remediation of Macquarie Point has been an exciting and engaging project, and has attracted a high level of interest from the Tasmanian public.
