Tasmania Branch Event – Acid Sulfate Soil Assessment and Management in Tasmania

There are an estimated 214,500 ha of coastal land in Tasmania that may contain land, surface water and groundwater affected by acid sulfate soils (ASS). In addition, there are 369,538 ha of inland areas with some probability of ASS occurring.

The level of development in these areas has been relatively low; however, with rapidly increasing development in Tasmania, the potential for impacts from disturbance of ASS is increasing.

In this event we will outline the likelihood of encountering ASS, the implications of disturbance of these soils during proposed developments or land disturbance, how ASS can be best assessed and managed, and issues relating to impacts on groundwater. Presentations will have a focus on Tasmania.
