Sydney Branch Event – Keynotes, Highlights and Stars, Oh My – ecoforum Comes to You!

If you missed ecoforum, or you just miss ecoforum, then this is unmissable. Join ALGA for a Sydney branch event that will deliver handpicked presentations – including a conference keynote – and unpack key themes and emerging issues. Combined with the chance to connect with colleagues and presenters, this mini-ecoforum will keep you engaged and up to date.

Presentations include:

  • Land Remediation and Climate Change: “Protect, Sustain, Thrive” Or “Out of time, out of money, out of ideas” – this keynote by Dr Sophie Wood and Nick Wood brings together experts in contaminated land and climate change to explore the new world of “non-stationarity” brought by climate change, and how the physical and economic impacts are challenging the existing model of “Contamination to Restoration”.
  • Are we really doing best practice on contaminated land projects, or is it just an illusion? In this presentation, Craig Cowper bypasses the mirage of “optimal strategies” and “innovation”, reveals failures in practice that are still happening, and includes takeaways on removing the magician’s sleight of hand, and moving forward.
  • Wastewater, Biosolids and Landfill Leachate – what can we learn from these reflections of our societal output? – Karl Bowles will provide an overview and insights from the ecoforum panel discussion on this topic. These waste streams are more than just an endpoint, they are a reflection of our industrial, agricultural, and domestic footprints. There are valuable lessons to be gained for waste management, resource recovery, and emerging contaminants.

Presentations will be followed by Q&A and a discussion on emerging themes from the conference.

Nick Wood

Nick Wood

Director
Climate Policy Research

Nick Wood is an expert in the emerging field of climate change as a sovereign risk. At the core of his strategic work is the simple observation that climate change is a new world of "non-stationarity". This presents serious challenges to the Australian economy and consequently to the ability of Governments to borrow money to fund development.
Nick has worked on climate policy for over 25 years across multiple jurisdictions. His work on the financial risk from climate change has been published in the journal Nature Climate Change and cited by the World Bank and the US Economic Council. Nick has attended two international United Nations Conference of Parties on climate change giving specialist talks on carbon pricing mechanisms, he co-authored the report "Climate Change and Good Corporate Governance" for Australian Institute of Company Directors and has provided advice to major banks, the CSIRO and KPMG's Global Assurance Methodology Group.
