As Sydney continues to grow and densify, the redevelopment of complex brownfield sites is becoming increasingly important to unlocking land for residential, commercial and public use. Former industrial precincts, infrastructure corridors and waterfront sites present both significant opportunity and complex environmental challenges.
This ALGA Sydney Branch event will explore the practical realities of urban remediation, bringing together perspectives from across the project lifecycle from early feasibility and commercial decision-making through to environmental auditing, remediation delivery and site closure.
Drawing on recent Sydney case studies including Blackwattle Bay and Lawrence Dry Cleaners Waterloo, the session will examine how contaminated land is managed alongside development pressures, regulatory requirements and commercial risk. Topics expected to be explored include the feasibility of brownfield versus greenfield development, the roles of developers, consultants, auditors and contractors, and how environmental risks are balanced with project viability.
The discussion will touch on the regulatory and planning frameworks that guide contaminated land management in NSW, including the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997, Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, and associated contaminated land planning guidelines.
Attendees will gain insight into how urban remediation projects progress from concept through to delivery, and why collaboration between regulators, developers and industry practitioners is critical to achieving safe and commercially viable redevelopment outcomes.
This event will be valuable for consultants, auditors, contractors, developers, regulators and emerging professionals interested in understanding the evolving challenges and opportunities of remediation in dense urban environments.
