PFAS National Environment Management Plan (NEMP 3.0) – What’s New and What Has Changed? – Event has passed, recording now available

This event is now passed and available on-demand. Please register and you will receive a dedicated link to watch the webinar

Join us for an informative webinar featuring Janina (environmental specialist from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (NSW DCCEEW)) and Shaun (Principal Adviser at the South Australian Environment Protection Authority), each of whom have played a role in developing the recently PFAS National Environmental Management Plan (NEMP) 3.0. This is a unique opportunity to hear from the professionals that have had direct involvement in the PFAS NEMP update process, offering insight into the science behind what has changed with the recent release of the PFAS NEMP 3.0 in Early March 2025.

What is PFAS NEMP?

The PFAS National Environmental Management Plan (PFAS NEMP) provides nationally agreed guidance and standards on the investigation, assessment and management of PFAS wastes and contamination in the environment, including prevention of the spread of contamination. It is developed by all State, Territory and the Australian Governments, as well as the New Zealand Government, through HEPA’s National Chemicals Working Group.

What’s Changing and Why It Matters?

The third version of the per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances National Environmental Management Plan 3.0 (PFAS NEMP 3.0) builds on NEMP 2.0 with the inclusion of new and revised guidance on priority areas as set out by 6 themes that include: the PFAS family, environmental data and monitoring, water, soil, resource recovery and waste and site-specific guidance.

Version 3.0, which has been under development since 2020, and contains additional and updated material on regulatory matters known to have considerable complexity. Updates include:

    • new guideline values for investigation and risk assessment
    • guidance around remediation of contaminated land
    • guidance on re-use of resource recovery products
    • risk-based criteria for re-use of biosolids contaminated with PFAS.

Why attend?

With extensive experience in strategic environmental science delivery, Janina brings a unique combination of technical expertise and strategic insight. Her involvement in both past and the current NEMP 3.0 as part of the National Chemicals Working Group, as well as her day job in leading multidisciplinary teams and strategic planning, allows her to bring a holistic perspective on the science that informs the management if PFAS.

Janina will point to key changes and updates in NEMP 3.0. Her technical background means she can talk ecological and human health risks. This makes her an authoritative voice on the science that underpins and informed the development of PFAS guidance. Janina isn’t here to just talk at you, but to have a conversation, as she is keen to contribute to linking science and risk-based assessments to practical outcomes for people and the environment.

Shaun brings a wealth of expertise in chemical regulation and environmental policy, making him a must-see speaker for anyone interested in understanding how this was applied to the PFAS NEMP 3.0. As a Principal Adviser at the South Australian Environment Protection Authority, Shaun leads a team regulating wastewater treatment across diverse industries, this has seen Shaun play a pivotal role in shaping Australia’s national approach to PFAS management as key member of the National Chemical Working Group, including providing input into water management and leading the development of updated advice on PFAS in biosolids within NEMP 3.0.

Collectively Shaun and Janina can provide a broad  but appropriately detailed overview of the changes to the PFAS NEMP, which can assist attendees in understanding how the recent updates in  PFAS NEMP 3.0 may apply to their industry, business, or practice.

Please note that this webinar is applicable to individuals involved in the management of PFAS. It will provide a general walkthrough of the PFAS NEMP Version 3.0.

Janina works for the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. She works across the teams in the Environment Protection Science Branch to deliver a strategic and integrated approach for science delivery in NSW government.

Janina is a highly experienced environmental scientist with a rare combination of technical expertise and big picture, strategic thinking. Janina applies her experience in strategy, leading multidisciplinary teams, and interagency technical advisory, to inform key government initiatives. Her approach is to enable collaboration and create a space to generate ideas.

Janina’s expertise include:

- Strategic thinking: strategic plans and business development to set science priorities, create new opportunities and partnerships with stakeholders

- Science for decision making - chemicals and their risks to ecosystems and human health to inform policy and regulatory decisions

- Multidisciplinary technical expertise - prioritisation of emerging contaminants and emerging issues, ecological and human health risk assessment, environmental impact assessments, data & gap analysis, water quality, ecotoxicology and the use of genomic tools.

Principal Adviser Compliance
Compliance, Circular Economy and Investigations Directorate, South Australian Environment Protection Authority

Shaun is a Principal Adviser at the South Australian Environment Protection Authority. He currently leads a team overseeing the assessment and regulation of wastewater treatment systems for a wide range of pollutants and industries.

Shaun has been heavily involved in a wide range of national chemical policy initiatives over a number of years and is a key South Australian representative on the National Chemical Working Group (under the Heads of EPAs Australia and New Zealand). In this role Shaun has provided significant contribution to Australia’s national guidance on management of PFAS including leading the water theme for the updated guidance for PFAS in biosolids in the PFAS NEMP 3.0.

Shaun has also coordinated the program that has led to a phase out of the use of PFAS containing AFFF following a legislated ban on the use of these products within South Australia.
