PFAS in Biosolids – What We Know, What’s Coming, and What Needs to Change (Global Perspectives)

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in biosolids have rapidly become one of the most complex challenges facing the water sector. Once considered a sustainable way to recycle nutrients, biosolids management is now under intense scrutiny as communities, regulators, and industries grapple with the environmental and health implications of these persistent chemicals.

Join this webinar to:

  • Explore the latest research, regulatory developments, and practical insights on PFAS in biosolids.
  • Understand how PFAS enter wastewater and sludge streams, their occurrence across treatment plants, and the evolving science on environmental fate.
  • Learn about innovative monitoring and treatment strategies being trialled in Australia and internationally.
  • Compare global responses and identify lessons for local application.

Key Topics:

  • New findings on PFAS science, including variability of concentrations among treatment plants, industrial source impacts, and limitations of current analytical and remediation approaches.
  • Emerging treatment technologies, including scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Updates on tightening PFAS regulatory frameworks and what they mean for biosolids management, compliance, and reuse options.

Three Questions will be Explored:

  1. What do we currently know about PFAS in biosolids and their risks to land application?
  2. What regulatory and technological changes are on the horizon?
  3. What needs to change to ensure sustainable, science-based management of biosolids in the PFAS era?

Why attend?
This session goes beyond problem recognition to practical, forward-looking solutions, combining source control, technology innovation, and regulatory clarity. Essential for environmental scientists, water utility managers, regulators, and policymakers navigating the intersection of emerging contaminants, resource recovery, and environmental protection.

Do not miss this opportunity to gain an understanding of actionable strategies for the future of biosolids management.

Speakers

Prashant Srivastava

Dr Prashant Srivastava

Senior Research Scientist
CSIRO

Dr Prashant Srivastava is a researcher with three decades of diverse experience in environmental and agricultural science. His research focuses on environmental contaminants, waste management, recycling, and the circular economy, and has been conducted across Asia, Australia, and North America.

He has led multidisciplinary research teams to deliver high-quality, high-impact projects addressing the assessment, remediation, and management of environmental contaminants. Through close collaboration with a range of stakeholders, he has contributed to significant advancements in the assessment and management of contaminated sites in Australia.

His current research interests centre on the assessment, remediation, and management of chemicals of emerging concern, including, but not limited to, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), microplastics, tyre rubber chemicals, e-waste and radionuclides in soil, surface water, groundwater, wastes, and biosolids.
