The management of PFAS in biosolids is an emerging challenge for regulators, industry and land managers worldwide. As scientific understanding improves and regulatory expectations continue to evolve, there is increasing focus on how PFAS is assessed, managed and regulated when biosolids and other organic fertilising materials are applied to land.

This international webinar will bring together leading experts from Australia and Europe to examine current regulatory frameworks, risk-based approaches and emerging research relating to PFAS in biosolids. Through a combination of policy perspectives, practical case studies and research updates, speakers will explore how different jurisdictions are responding to PFAS contamination, recent developments in guidance and regulation, and the implications for land application, agriculture and environmental protection.

In this webinar, our speakers will explore:

  • The Australian and European regulatory frameworks governing PFAS in biosolids and other organic fertilising materials applied to land.
  • How risk-based approaches are being used to derive PFAS limits and support management and regulatory decision-making.
  • Practical case studies highlighting PFAS management in agricultural settings and land application programs.
  • Research examining PFAS uptake pathways in livestock, food crops, soils, groundwater and surface water.
  • Key challenges associated with land application of biosolids and the protection of environmental and human health.
  • Emerging policy developments, research priorities and future directions for PFAS regulation and risk assessment.

Participants will gain direct insight from regulators, researchers and practitioners involved in developing policy, conducting research and supporting decision-making in this rapidly evolving area.

This webinar is relevant to regulators, environmental consultants, contaminated land practitioners, risk assessors, researchers, wastewater utilities, waste and resource recovery professionals, government agencies, land managers and agricultural sector representatives involved in the assessment, management and regulation of PFAS in biosolids and land application programs.

A live question-and-answer session will follow the presentations, providing participants with the opportunity to engage directly with experts from Australia and Europe. The webinar will be recorded.

Matthias Zessner

Professor
TU Wien, Austria – Research Unit of Water Quality Management

Professor Matthias Zessner is Head of the Research Group of Water Quality and River Basin Management at TU Wien, Austria. His research focuses on the impacts of human activities on water quality, including pollutant sources, transport pathways and environmental effects across catchments and river basins. His work combines monitoring, modelling and interdisciplinary approaches to support water resource management, pollution control and sustainable environmental decision-making.

Pierre Jacquemin

Pierre Jacquemin

Project Manager
ISSeP

Pierre Jacquemin has been working for the Walloon Public Service Scientific Institute for the past eight years, where he is currently responsible for the Environmental Health Unit.

The unit focuses on three main areas of activity: human biomonitoring, the development of environmental health geographic information systems, and human health risk assessment.

Prior to joining the institute, Pierre worked for six years as a consultant in a soil and groundwater consultancy, where he gained hands-on experience in soil investigation, contaminated sites and the practical implementation of soil protection regulations.

In his current role, Pierre contributes to the development and improvement of legislation and policies related to the protection of soil and groundwater. His professional background therefore combines practical experience in the assessment and management of contaminated sites with expertise in human health risk assessment and environmental policy.

This combination has given him a valuable perspective on the links between environmental contamination, soil and groundwater protection, and human health, as well as on both the practical implementation and the development of environmental legislation.

Antti Mikkonen

Dr Antti Mikkonen

Principal Health Risk Advisor
EPA Victoria

Dr Antti Mikkonen is Principal Scientist at EPA Victoria and an Industry Associate Professor at RMIT University. His work focuses on the assessment and management of public health risks associated with chemical exposures. His current research includes understanding contaminant transfer and behaviour in biological systems, including PFAS uptake into livestock and crops, and developing modelling tools to support evidence-based regulatory decision-making.

Lorenzo Ricolvi

Dr Lorenzo Ricolfi

Senior Health Risk Advisor
EPA Victoria

Dr Lorenzo Ricolfi is an environmental scientist and health risk advisor. His work focuses on the application of research synthesis in human and environmental health, with a particular interest in emerging contaminants. He is particularly interested in evidence synthesis, meta-research, and methodological innovation aimed at making environmental science more reliable, reusable, and collaborative.
