Perth Branch Event – DWER and you – Regulator Update

There are significant changes happening in the Department of Water and Environmental Regulations application of the Contaminated Sites Act. Updated guidance documents including the Identification, reporting and classification of Contaminated Sites in Western Australia and the PFAS National Environmental Management Plan 3.0 have been released and are starting to be implemented.

The development of classified sites associated with closed landfills or subject to landfilling activities is becoming more common and there is an expectation that more land will be developed for residential land use during the present housing shortage. At the same time there is growing knowledge of the contamination issues that need to be addressed as part of the development of these sites.

The effective management of waste in a manner that does not create associated contaminated sites, affect sensitive receptors and is sustainable is becoming an increasing concern for the department and the community.

Dealing with mine closures with consideration for future land uses, particularly by the traditional owners is another area that requires increased consideration.

While the department is considering these substantial issues, the regulation of sites for specific soil, and groundwater contamination, concerns continues.
