**THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED FROM FRIDAY 2 MAY 2025 TO FRIDAY 9 MAY 2025 DUE TO A POOR WEATHER FORECAST**
The Newcastle Coastal Geotrail Walking Tour is a hands-on way to learn about the geology of the Sydney Basin – a key foundation for your contaminated land career. Come and learn about the coal measures that outcrop at Newcastle, west of Blue Mountains and Wollongong, the Gondwana forests that didn’t survive the Earth’s largest mass extinction event, and the formation of the sandstone and shale sediments that you’ll encounter on most sites across the Sydney Basin. This tour will enhance your understanding of the fate and transport of contaminants in the ground.
Major works have restricted access to Newcastle Baths and Newcastle Beach South over the last few years, so come along and see the results!
Logistics: Meet at Tramway Reserve, Newcastle East (it’s in Google Maps), between Scott Street and Shortland Esplanade / Newcastle Baths at 2.45pm for a 3pm start.
The walking tour will take in the Cowrie Hole, Newcastle Baths, Newcastle Beach, Newcastle South, the Bogey Hole and King Edward Park. The walk will finish back at Tramway Reserve at 5pm.

Phil has over 25 years experience as a geoscientist. As a local boy, the Newcastle coastline and Glenrock are like his own backyard. He was the lead author for the Newcastle Coastal Geotrail, and he has led many field trips over the years.
Phil loves the transition from the urban to the natural environment with Glenrock on the edge of the cities of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, and the rich Aboriginal and European history of the area.

Cressida has lived locally for over 17 years, after growing up in Melbourne. Cressida is a geoscientist, with a lifelong love of the outdoors and Australian wildlife.
She has a passion for birding and bird photography, and enjoys the seasonal plant variation through Glenrock – particularly the native orchids. There is so much to enjoy on our doorstep!
