24 – 25 February 2027
ALGA invites abstracts that share technical knowledge, practical experience, research findings, case studies, innovative approaches or regulatory perspectives relevant to groundwater and surface water interaction.
Contributions are encouraged from consultants, industry professionals, government, researchers, regulators, Traditional Owners and emerging professionals. The symposium topics are intentionally broad to support a diverse and engaging program.
Submissions may cover investigation methods, risk assessment, modelling, characterisation techniques, management strategies, regulatory frameworks or lessons learned from practical projects. Abstracts should clearly explain the relevance of the work, the approach taken, key findings or lessons, and its value to the contaminated land and groundwater sector.
Select the topic that best aligns with your proposed presentation. Abstracts may address more than one area; however, authors should nominate the primary topic most relevant to their content.
| Topic | Overview |
|---|---|
| Groundwater and Surface Water Interaction | Interaction in practice, including contamination pathways, discharge impacts, mass flux concepts, assessment interpretation and management outcomes. |
| Regulatory Decision-Making, Risk Assessment and Criteria Selection | Risk where groundwater interacts with receiving waters, including criteria selection, assessment expectations and regulatory decision-making. |
| Holistic Water Systems and Cultural Perspectives | Water as a connected system, including First Nations, Māori and other Indigenous perspectives, cultural values, partnerships and knowledge systems. |
| Characterisation Methods and Approaches | Methods used to define interaction, including sampling design, pore water sampling, water quality indicators, temperature, isotopes and tracers. |
| Rivers, Tidal Bodies and Interface Zones | River systems, tidal and marine environments, hyporheic zones and intertidal areas, with practical assessment and management examples. |
All abstracts should be submitted as a Standard Presentation. To support the development of a balanced and engaging symposium program, the Symposium Committee may discuss alternative formats with selected authors where appropriate, including a Lightning Talk or participation in a Panel Discussion.
| Presentation Format | Overview |
|---|---|
| Standard Presentation 20-minute session including Q&A |
A structured presentation format allowing speakers to deliver technical insights, research findings, practical case studies, lessons learned and innovative approaches relevant to groundwater and surface water interaction. Each session includes time for audience questions and discussion. |
To complete your abstract submission, you will be asked to provide:
Optional supporting material:
A full abstract document may also be uploaded.
A maximum of two presenting authors may be nominated for each abstract.
Authors will be asked to confirm:
Abstracts are assessed using a weighted scoring framework to support a fair and consistent review process. The criteria consider the clarity, technical quality, practical value and topic alignment of each proposed presentation.
| Criterion | Definition | Weight | Assessment Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity and Structure | How clearly the purpose, approach and key message are communicated in a logical order. | 15% | Excellent (100%) Good (80%) Fair (60%) Poor (40%) Zero (0%) |
| Presenter Engagement | The presenter’s known ability to communicate technical information clearly and contribute effectively to the symposium. | 10% | Excellent (100%) Good (80%) Fair (60%) Unknown (40%) Poor (20%) Zero (0%) |
| Scientific Robustness | The credibility of the technical approach, including the evidence, methods, assumptions, interpretation and conclusions. | 30% | Excellent (100%) Good (80%) Fair (60%) Poor (40%) Not Aligned (20%) Zero (0%) |
| Practical Applicability | How the findings, lessons or approaches may be applied in practice and support useful decision-making. | 15% | Excellent (100%) Good (80%) Fair (60%) Poor (40%) Not Aligned (20%) Zero (0%) |
| Topic Alignment | How closely the abstract aligns with the selected symposium topic and the broader purpose of the event. | 30% | Excellent (100%) Good (80%) Fair (60%) Poor (40%) Not Aligned (20%) Zero (0%) |
Weighted scores from reviewers are considered by the Symposium Committee when developing the final program.
