Data Centres and Water Usage in Australia

Please note that registration is limited to 250 participants due to licensing constraints.

Data centres are rapidly emerging as major water users in Australia. This webinar will explore how the urban water sector is adapting to this demand and the implications for planning and sustainability. Water utilities always strive for good value, safe and environmentally sustainable water supplies.

Danielle Francis will provide an overview of:

  • How data centres operate and their water requirements, including how cooling choices influence demand under different climate conditions.
  • Projections for data centre growth in Australia and the associated impacts on existing water supplies and future planning, including alternative sources.
  • The role of water utilities in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable supplies as data centre demand grows.
  • Key industry metrics such as Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) and how this links with Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
  • What “good” water efficiency looks like and the factors shaping sustainability planning in urban environments.
  • International trends and policy directions in data centre water management.

Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how data centres function, why cooling choices matter, and the policy and planning considerations shaping this evolving sector.
