Join the Tetra Tech team in Darwin for an evening presentation and networking session exploring the unexpected challenges encountered during a Defence UXO remediation project at the former RAAF Darwin burn trench.
Originally scoped as a UXO project with potential incidental ACM interaction, the works rapidly evolved following the identification of weathered and fire-impacted asbestos containing materials (ACM) exhibiting friable characteristics within active work areas. As remediation activities progressed, ACM fragments continued to be encountered throughout excavation and stockpile handling activities, requiring reassessment of both the remediation methodology and occupational hygiene controls.
The presentation will discuss how the project team adapted to changing site conditions in real time, including implementation of Class A asbestos controls, airborne fibre monitoring strategies, field laboratory deployment for rapid turnaround of AFM results, and integration between UXO, occupational hygiene and asbestos removal teams.
The session will also explore the challenge of interpreting negative bulk soil sample results against ongoing friable ACM risk, and why elevated controls remained necessary despite consistently low airborne fibre monitoring results.
Attendees will gain practical insight into asbestos in soils risk management, UXO/remediation interface challenges, and adaptive decision-making within a complex contaminated land environment, followed by networking drinks hosted at the Tetra Tech Darwin office.
