AI: Friend or Foe?, Andrew Barker, Senversa
Explore how AI is becoming a valuable tool within the environmental industry and its practical applications in real-world contaminated land and groundwater scenarios. This session will cover practical uses of AI for reporting, data interpretation, and research, while also exploring responsible implementation, data security, and the importance of review and approval processes.
Ground Zero: Contam 101, Andrew Mitchell, ADE Consulting Group
Gain valuable insights into common industry challenges, learn how to avoid mistakes that can impact assessment quality, and build a stronger foundation for your professional development. This session is ideal for anyone looking to develop practical knowledge and confidence as they begin their journey in the industry.
Risk 101: First Steps, Dr Gemma Williams, SAGE Environmental and Dr Anand Chandra, Stantec
This practical session introduces the fundamentals of risk assessment within the contaminated land and groundwater industry. Guided by experienced trainers, you will explore conceptual site models and develop an understanding of source-pathway-receptor linkages through a real-life case study. This recording provides a practical foundation to help you better understand how risks are identified, assessed, and communicated in real-world projects.
When Landfills Breathe: Understanding Ground Gas, Sam Willis, Alliance and David McFadden, Tetra Tech Coffey
Discover the fundamentals of hazardous ground gases (HGG), including their common sources, how they are generated, and the potential risks they can pose to people, buildings, and the environment. This practical session will also explore how hazardous ground gases are incorporated into a Conceptual Site Model (CSM), supported by real-world examples that demonstrate why HGG assessment is an important consideration in contaminated land investigations.
Follow the Plume: Unseen Journeys Beneath our Feet, Dr Lange Jorstad, Geosyntec Consultants
Hydrogeology and groundwater contamination processes set the foundation for understanding how contaminants move through the subsurface. This session introduces how to identify key information early in an investigation, interpret plume behaviour, and apply basic fate and transport principles essential for effective groundwater assessment.
Whether you are starting your career, expanding your technical understanding, or looking for a refresher on key concepts, the Contaminated Land and Groundwater 101 on-demand series provides accessible and practical learning to support your professional development.

Andrew Barker is Head of Data at Senversa and a leading voice on how artificial intelligence is reshaping environmental practice. With two decades of experience across the land and groundwater sector, he has witnessed the gap between hype and reality. Nowadays he works to bridge that gap.
He leads Senversa’s data and AI strategy, helping practitioners, regulators and clients turn complex information into clear, trusted decisions. Known for his pragmatic innovation, Andrew champions AI that is practical, ethical and useful, not just exciting.

Andrew is an environmental engineer with an executive master of public administration and over 25 years experience in contaminated land. He has worked for the NSW EPA and the Sydney Olympics and has assisted Defence with managing PFAS contamination. He currently leads the national environment practice at ADE Consulting Group. Andrew uses his expertise to argue for pragmatic and proportional responses to complex contamination issues.

Dr Anand Chandra is a senior principal environmental risk assessor with over 20 years of experience in consulting, regulation, and research across the Asia Pacific. He specialises in human-health and environmental risk assessments, particularly for sites impacted by organic and inorganic contaminants. His work spans diverse sectors, including landfills, mining, transport, and energy, with a strong focus on complex contamination issues such as PFAS, vapour intrusion and acid mine drainage. He provides expert support to contaminated land auditors, also acting as an expert witness in environmental legal proceedings. A registered member of ACTRA and part of ALGA’s Risk Assessment Special Interest Group, Anand employs a weight-of-evidence approach to deliver scientifically robust, risk-based solutions. His work ensures regulatory compliance, promotes sustainability, and enhances the cost-effectiveness of remediation and risk mitigation strategies.

David McFadden is a Senior Associate Environmental Engineer with over 15 year’s experience working in the contaminated land industry.

Dr Gemma Williams is a human health and ecological risk specialist with over fifteen years of experience in the contaminated land industry.
Gemma’s experience in evaluating risks to human and ecological receptors is underpinned by her knowledge of biological and ecological processes and is supported by her strong problem-solving skills and pragmatic approach to achieving project outcomes.

Dr Lange Jorstad, PhD, is a Senior Principal Contaminant Hydrogeologist with 25 years’ experience in the design, management and delivery of contaminated land assessment and remediation services and related corporate advisory services in Australia, Asia Pacific and the US.

Sam Willis works for Alliance out of Sydney, previously working across the UK with an interest around ground gas and soil vapour assessment.
