Carbon-Negative Activated Carbon: A New Tool for PFAS Removal

This event is free for all ALGA members

PFAS contamination is one of the toughest challenges facing environmental professionals, water utilities, and site owners. While awareness is growing, practical treatment options that deliver performance and reduce emissions are still emerging.

Join this webinar for an independent, science-based overview of activated carbon in PFAS treatment, with a spotlight on low-temperature activated carbon (LTA), an Australian innovation produced through a low-energy process. Recent lifecycle analysis shows LTA can be carbon-negative at commercial scale, offering a sustainable pathway for remediation.

What you will learn:

  • How LTA works and why it matters for PFAS removal
  • Independent LCA findings and implications for sustainability reporting
  • Key performance considerations and system design tips
  • When activated carbon excels – and when extra polishing is needed
  • The role of pilot testing in reducing project risk
  • End-of-life options for spent carbon

This session is ideal for consultants, regulators, water authorities, and contaminated-land professionals seeking practical, lower-emission solutions aligned with PFAS NEMP principles.

Bygen

Lewis Dunnigan is the CEO and Co-Founder of Bygen, an Australian activated carbon company spun out from the University of Adelaide and pioneering low-temperature activated carbon (LTA) technology for sustainable PFAS, groundwater and contaminated-site treatment. With a PhD in chemical engineering, Lewis has led Bygen’s transformation from university research into a nationally recognised environmental technology company supplying sustainably produced activated carbon to utilities, consultants, industry and government, and was recently recognised in the Top 100 Innovators list in The Australian newspaper.

Bygen’s LTA technology has recently been independently validated through a Lifecycle Analysis (LCA) as being carbon-negative, highlighting its substantial emissions advantage over conventional coal-based activated carbon. Bygen is also constructing advanced production facilities in Australia, the United States, Malaysia and the Philippines, enabling reliable global supply and responsive local service.
