Brisbane Branch Event – Practical Groundwater: The Dark Art of Groundwater Science

Join ALGA for two engaging technical presentations that explore the critical, yet often underappreciated, dimensions of groundwater in environmental management. These talks will provide valuable insights for professionals in water resources, environmental planning, ecology, and policy development.

Talk 1: GDEs – 101

In this session, Dr Angela Bush introduces Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs) for a broad audience, providing insight into this diverse field of science that has only emerged in the last few decades. GDEs are a valuable and often poorly understood component of our ecology. This talk provides a basic understanding for professionals working adjacent to this field with the aim of widening awareness of when to stop and think about GDEs. This talk will provide an overview of:

  • How GDEs are defined in Australia;
  • What the different types of GDEs mean;
  • What tools are available to understand GDE presence and function;
  • How GDEs can be impacted by changes to groundwater levels and quality; and
  • Some challenges for GDE management in the Queensland regulatory setting.

Talk 2: Groundwater in the Gold Coast Hinterland – A Case Study in Community Engagement and Collaborative Monitoring

This presentation showcases a detailed case study from the Gold Coast Hinterland, where groundwater plays a vital role in supporting domestic use, ecological function, and regional planning. Dr Lucy Reading will explore how this resource is being impacted by both anthropogenic pressures and climate variability, and how collaborative monitoring efforts are helping to build a more resilient understanding of groundwater systems.
Key topics include:
• Domestic reliance on groundwater in rural and peri-urban settings
• Multi-agency and community-led monitoring initiatives
• Engagement with First Nations communities to integrate traditional knowledge
• Education and outreach to improve groundwater literacy
This case study highlights the importance of integrated, inclusive, and data-driven approaches to groundwater management in complex and changing environments

Talk 3: Groundwater bore installation near Spontaneous Combustion

Ecoforum Favourite – back by popular demand.

Amanda Clements presents lessons learnt from the installation of groundwater monitoring bores near spontaneous combustion material.

Speakers

Lucy Reading

Dr Lucy Reading

Associate Professor
Queensland University of Technology

Dr. Lucy Reading is an Associate Professor, who has been teaching Environmental Science (Water Quality and Hydrology) and Groundwater Science at the Queensland University of Technology since 2015. She has over 20 years’ teaching, training, research and community engagement experience. Her current work is particularly focused on: groundwater monitoring, groundwater resource assessments, groundwater-surface water interactions, groundwater quality assessments and water resource management.

Lucy’s vision is to improve water management through improved understanding of groundwater resources. She collaborates with all levels of government in Australia to develop groundwater monitoring networks and directly inform groundwater policy. She also collaborates with communities in the areas where she leads monitoring projects with an aim to learn more about water related issues and help to address community concerns.

Dr Angela Bush

Principal Hydrogeologist
Australasian Groundwater & Environmental Consultants (AGE)

Angela Bush is a Principal Hydrogeologist with over 16 years of experience across several sectors including consulting, research, and education. Angela works with groundwater specialist firm AGE Consulting, and currently leads a team of four other scientists in Brisbane.

Angela’s projects encompass conceptual hydrogeological models, integrated groundwater assessments, contaminant investigations, and geochemical interpretation of groundwater processes. One of her strengths is underpinning groundwater quality and contamination assessments with an understanding of groundwater evolution mechanisms and seepage behaviour. Angela also has experience in collaborating with ecologists to evaluate impacts to groundwater environmental values, including impacts to GDEs from changes in groundwater access or quality.

Amanda Clements

Associate Hydrogeologist
CDM Smith

Amanda Clements is an Associate Hydrogeologist at CDM Smith. With over 20 years of professional experience in Australian geology and hydrogeology, Amanda has a strong background in fieldwork, groundwater regulatory compliance, impact assessment, hydrochemistry and groundwater modelling.

Amanda enjoys collaborating with clients and drillers to deliver solutions in tough ground conditions. Over the years, Amanda has been responsible for drilling programs across Australia and enjoys being able to apply her skills to deliver fit-for-purpose groundwater monitoring solutions.
