Auckland Branch Event – Wynyard Quarter Walking Tour: Reclamation, Contamination and Redevelopment (SOLD OUT)

This event is SOLD OUT.
→ Due to its great popularity, the Auckland Branch is planning on running this event again in 2026.  Stay tuned to ALGA’s newsletter, What’s On, to know when.

The reclamation of Wynyard Quarter from the Waitemata Harbour, which included the use of wastes from the nearby Auckland Gas Company gasworks and Auckland Municipal Destructor (rubbish incinerator), and subsequent use of the area for a range of port related activities, the timber trade and bulk petrochemical storage, resulted in a collection of intermingled contaminated sites which have required a variety of remedial solutions to support revitalisation to the harbour-side community that exists today.

Come and join our group of presenters as they walk you through the history, contamination conditions, historical prosecutions and litigations, and variety of remedial solutions that have been, and continue to be, implemented across this central area Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland’s waterfront.

As the title indicates, this event is a walking tour rather than a formal presentation. It is intended to provide an opportunity to share experiences, lessons learnt and provide a platform to ask questions that might not be forthcoming in a more formal setting. Bring comfortable footwear, suitable clothing, and your best curly questions. The tour will end with refreshments at Sixteen Tun.

Should the event be delayed due to adverse weather conditions, ALGA will advise registrants via email 24hr out from the event.

Important Note:  Should the event be delayed due to adverse weather conditions, ALGA will advise registrants via email.

BYO! To minimise our use of plastic, we encourage delegates to bring their own reusable water bottles.
