Auckland Branch Event – Women in Environmental Science

Join us for ALGA Auckland Branch International Women’s Day event, where Helina Stil, Sarah Hall, Justine Bennett and Courtney Armstrong will each present on their individual paths to success and reflect on the learnings from their journeys to get there. While their journeys, industries and challenges may differ, the audience will learn from the common themes in how the speakers overcame the same challenges we all face and the skills in leadership, resilience, and prioritization that helped them in accomplishing their goals.

Although this event is a celebration of amazing women in our industry, it is aimed at being welcoming, inspirational and empowering for all attendees, wherever they are in their career. The learnings will help all the attendees in achieving their own goals, while also empowering those around them.

This evening event will include time for networking, presentations and a group discussion with the speakers.

Speakers

Justine Bennett

Justine Bennett

Technical Director - Environment and Water
GHD

Justine is an environmental practitioner with over 25 years’ experience across a wide scope of environmental areas. She has successfully led teams to carry out and report environmental impact assessments to inform consenting, planning and prioritisation decisions, predominantly in the water and transport sectors.   She has extensive track record in integrated catchment management with a focus on land use change and the use of water sensitive design approaches, most recently in the Waikato and Wellington and previously with Western Bay of Plenty and Auckland Council.  Justine has recently assisted Taumata Arowai with the development of the recently gazetted, national Wastewater Environmental Performance Standards and has successfully completed sustainability assessments for a number of infrastructure projects.

Sarah Hall

Sarah Hall

Project Manager - Grid Delivery Buildings & Grounds
Transpower

Sarah Hall is a Project Manager at Transpower New Zealand with nearly four years’ experience delivering a diverse portfolio of buildings and grounds projects across the country. Her work spans seismic strengthening, demolition, building refurbishments, fencing and roading, erosion control, and land slip remediation—projects that sit at the critical intersection of infrastructure, land, and environment.

Working closely with contractors, site teams, and specialist advisors, Sarah places a strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental impact, ensuring environmental considerations are embedded into practical, on-the-ground delivery.

As an asset-owner Project Manager, she brings a broad, system-level view of the environmental science disciplines, regulatory frameworks, and governance bodies required to support the development and upgrading of infrastructure across New Zealand.

Courtney Armstrong

Courtney Armstrong

Senior Project Manager
Auckland Council - Landfills

Courtney Armstrong is a Senior Project Manager in Auckland Council’s Closed Landfills team, with over 15 years’ experience in contaminated land and complex project delivery. She leads climate resilience and landfill risk assessment initiatives across a large portfolio of legacy sites, supporting climate adaptation, risk mitigation, and long-term planning.

Her career has been non-linear, including a period working in the UK in banking and insurance, before returning to the environmental sector. This broader experience has strengthened her commercial and stakeholder capability and shaped her values-driven approach to public-sector environmental work.

Courtney is also a working mum of two, a school board trustee, and a high-performance Masters swimmer, and speaks candidly about the balancing act of leadership, ambition, family, and personal well-being.

Helina Stil

Helina Stil

Director
Nikau Contractors

Helina Stil is the Group Risk Director at Nikau Group and Senior Asbestos and Demolition Risk Specialist based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Helina leads high-risk project governance and HSEQ strategy across complex demolition, asbestos removal and remediation works. She is also President of the New Zealand Demolition & Asbestos Association (NZDAA) and is passionate about lifting industry standards through strong training, practical guidance, and industry accountability.

Helina is a firm believer in protecting workers and communities through competent leadership and an industry-led approach, focused on doing the work properly rather than relying on increasing layers of regulation.
