Auckland Branch Event – Moanataiari Subdivision – Retrospectives

The Moanataiari subdivision in Thames was built on land reclaimed from the sea using old mine tailings. In late 2011, shortly before the release of the NES-CS, soil testing confirmed elevated levels of arsenic and other contaminants were present, leading to public concerns about potential health risks and property devaluation. Agencies involved in discussing, scoping or preparing investigation, risk assessment and remediation strategies included Environment Waikato, Ministry for the Environment, Waikato District Health Board and Thames-Coromandel District Council.

Four contaminated land specialists involved on behalf of different clients and at different stages of the investigation process will provide their recollections on how events unfolded and what was undertaken at the time.

Speakers

AndrewRumsby

Andrew Rumsby

Principal Environmental Consultant
EHS Support

Andrew is an environmental chemist with over 25 years of experience in contaminated land assessments, including the evaluation of the fate and ecological impacts of metals and organic compounds in the environment. Andrew’s expertise includes assessing the ecological effects of chemical exposures, environmental fate and transport modelling and using environmental forensic techniques to identify the source of contaminants. Andrew has undertaken environmental impacts of historical mine sites within the Coromandel for over 15 years. These sites have included the Tui Mine, Moanataiari subdivision, Monowai and Zeehan mines in the Waiomu Valley, Maratoto mine, Broken Hill mines, Puhipuhi Mercury Mine and has undertaken sediment quality studies within the Firth of the Thames and Coromandel Harbours to understand the impact of historical mining. Andrew has also developed site-specific guidelines for protecting human health at historic mine sites and conducted a desktop review of historical mining activities in the Coromandel.

Dave Bull

Director
HAIL Environmental

Dr Dave Bull loves soil and hates waste. He was trained as a chemist but eventually escaped into the wild. He is a director of boutique site contamination specialist consultancy HAIL Environmental and on the board of the Waste Management Institute New Zealand. Dave has a lot of opinions about contaminated land theory and regulation, naturally occurring 'contaminants', and technical details like the bioavailability of arsenic and which way round to hold an XRF.

SimonHunt

Simon Hunt

Director
EHS Support

Simon has over 35 years of experience in international contaminated land management. He holds a BSc Hons and MSc from the UK, is a Chartered Geologist and Certified Environmental Practitioner-Contaminated Site Specialist. He has worked on contaminated land risk and communication-related issues since the late 1980s. He worked on the Moanataiari project from early 2012 onwards for TCDC (while at Golder Associates), which included negotiating the use of bio-availability testing for the human health risk assessment work and contaminated land management across the subdivision.

Since the mid-1990s, Simon has been involved in writing NZ contaminated land guidance and policy. He helped establish the CEnvP-SCS and was previously an ALGA Board member, as well as an ALGA Life Member.
