Auckland Branch Event – Current Perspectives on Acid Sulfate Soils

Join ALGA for an insightful session bringing together leading consultants and regulators to share their latest experiences managing Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) in New Zealand. With increasing development pressure and evolving guidance, understanding how ASS is investigated and managed in practice is more important than ever. Our speakers include:

  • Jonathan Caldwell (Waikato Regional Council), who will provide a regulator’s perspective, drawing on his leadership of the region’s ASS mapping and technical guidance. Since their release, he has observed a clear rise in investigations and a move toward more consistent and standardised approaches.
  • Lindsay Lutes will share her recent experiences, with a focus on site investigation, characterisation, and implementation. With experience leading ASS investigations and management plans across the Waikato, her work focuses on translating complex technical findings into clear, actionable outcomes for construction teams.
  • Shane Moore will round out the session by sharing practical consultancy insights, focused on delivering pragmatic, science-based solutions. Using recent work in Auckland to exemplify how soils with apparent acid-generating potential can behave differently in reality. Specifically, where low reaction rates and natural buffering can mean that without context and holistic understanding, the laboratory results can significantly overestimate the risk.

This session will provide valuable perspectives for consultants, regulators, and project stakeholders seeking to align best practice with efficient, real-world delivery.
