ASC NEPM Schedule B5 for Ecological Risk Assessment: What You Need to Know – Event has passed, recording now available

This event is now passed and available on-demand. Please register and you will receive a dedicated link to watch the webinar

This event is free for all ALGA Members

This webinar is an initiative of the Risk Assessment Specialist Interest Group

Schedule B5 in the Assessment of Site Contamination National Environmental Protection Measure (ASC NEPM) (amended 2013) provides practitioners with ecological investigation levels (EIL) that:

  • incorporate soil physical and chemical factors affecting toxicity,
  • use methods consistent with the ANZG water quality guidelines for toxicants, and
  • assign percent species protection levels to specific land uses.

Ecological screening levels (ESLs) are also provided for some toxicants based on Canadian soil screening values that were modified for inclusion in the ASC NEPM.

This webinar will outline how the EILs and ESLs:

  • were derived,
  • can be modified for site-specific assessment (where applicable), and
  • are applied to land use with differing ecological sensitivity.

A review of methods used to derive ecological soil screening levels in other jurisdictions will be provided to inform the adoption of such levels where no EIL or ESL currently exists.

Attendees will be guided through the process of developing a robust conceptual site model that describes:

  • receptors of concern,
  • contaminant transport mechanisms, and
  • pathways of receptor exposure.

With this knowledge, practitioners will be better equipped to define the scope of field data collection, laboratory testing requirements, and desk-based data-gathering activities, thereby reducing uncertainties in ecological risk assessments.

Speakers

Gemma Williams

Gemma Williams

Nation Partners

Gemma holds a PhD in environmental toxicology and has over fifteen years consulting experience in human health and ecological risk assessment. Gemma’s academic training in biology, ecology and environmental toxicology has supported her strong understanding of ecological risk assessment processes.

Gemma’s training and consulting experience enables her to bring a pragmatic and multiple lines of evidence approach to ecological risk assessments. Gemma is passionate about ensuring that ecosystem composition and health is thoroughly considered in the ERA process.
