Join Louise Wilson, Stephen Maxwell and David Tully for a practical online workshop on applying sustainable remediation principles to contaminated site decision-making.
The session will provide a short introduction to sustainable remediation and the role of environmental, social and economic considerations in remediation planning. Participants will then work through a hypothetical case study using Ramboll’s SURE tool to assess and compare remedial options.
Using a shared online workbook, participants will score selected sustainability indicators, then review the combined results and discuss how indicator selection, scoring, and weighting can influence outcomes. The session will conclude with questions and discussion.
What to expect
This workshop will be particularly valuable for contaminated land consultants, environmental scientists, remediation practitioners, regulators, project managers, asset owners and sustainability professionals involved in remediation planning, options assessment and project delivery. A live Q&A will happen throughout, and the session will be recorded.

Stephen Maxwell is a Senior Managing Consultant with Ramboll and a member of the Australasian Sustainable Remediation Forum. He co-facilitated the Sustainable Remediation in Practice workshop delivered at the 2026 WasteMINZ and ALGA Conference and will lead the SURE tool demonstration and co-facilitate the participant scoring activity. Stephen has over 15 years' experience in contaminated land management, with a focus in recent years on providing assessment and management advice for community-scale contamination associated with metalliferous mining in regional NSW.

Louise Wilson is Director of Collaborations, an applied science consulting firm, and a member of the Australasian Sustainable Remediation Forum. She co-facilitated the Sustainable Remediation in Practice workshop delivered at the 2026 WasteMINZ and ALGA Conference and will introduce the case study and co-lead the online workshop. Louise has 14 years of experience in contaminated land management and has recently been applying Sustainable Remediation approaches to her work supporting territorial authorities to assess the risks posed by closed landfills and using SR tools to develop and assess potential remedial options.

Dr David Tully is Director of Contaminated Land Solutions and has nearly 40 years of experience in land assessment and rehabilitation. His work spans site contamination assessment and remediation, technical review, engagement with auditors and regulators, waste soil assessment and sustainable reuse, landfill management, landfill gas and soil vapour protection, training and mentoring. David is a former Chair of the Australasian Sustainable Remediation Forum and remains an active contributor. He will provide the introductory segment on sustainable remediation and available tools.
