Adelaide Branch Event – High Resolution Vertical Profiling (HRVP) New Tools and Tricks To Characterise Your Site?

Direct Push High Resolution Vertical Profiling sub surface investigation methods are able to provide accurate “real time” information on site geology and volatile organic compound concentrations / distribution.  This information is valuable in developing fast detailed understanding of site geological layers in various site investigations.  Lesser known applications include the use of Membrane Interface Probe logging to identify the presences and concentrations of Methane in unconsolidated soils typically associated with landfill-generated methane and naturally-occurring methane.  Discussion of the MIP probe use in methane investigations including some example applications and site data sets will be presented.

Borehole logging technologies based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provide useful information on soil and aquifer properties. Newer NMR logging tools are being released that can be deployed quickly and simply in site investigations through direct push methods.  The properties direct push NMR can measure include water content, saturated porosity and estimates of hydraulic conductivity in undisturbed formation adjacent to the borehole. Vista Clara’s NMR Harpoon system also combines cone penetrating testing (CPT) and NMR data simultaneously, during drilling. The high-resolution measurements are extremely valuable to improve solute transport models. We will show examples of NMR-derived data sets, including porosity and hydraulic conductivity, applied to various real-life model scenarios.

Whether you’re an emerging professional, an ‘old hand’ or have responsibility for project management or delivery, this engaging presentation will get you up to date on the range of capabilities on offer with HRVP direct push drilling.

As usual, drinks and canapes will be served before and after the presentation.

Geophysicist & Researcher
Vista – Clara Australian Representative & Adelaide University

Michael is a Geophysicist with Vista Clara, based in Adelaide, South Australia. He has nearly 30 years of experience in electrical geophysical techniques, including NMR-based techniques, various time domain EM (TEM) and frequency domain EM (FEM) techniques, and resistivity/IP. He is a Research Affiliate at both the University of Adelaide and Flinders University. Much of his research has been applied to using electromagnetic methods to image salinity distribution in the near-river environment, mostly on and adjacent to the River Murray in South Australia.
