The Mount Lofty – Flinders Ranges, a continuous upland chain extending from Kangaroo Island in the south to Mount Babbage in the north, are typically separated from adjacent lowland plains by prominent escarpments resulting from faulting in the region’s relatively recent geological history. These include the Para, Eden-Burnside, Clarendon-Ochre Cove and Willunga faults near Adelaide, as well as range-bounding faults further north.
Although the region is still seismically active, most faults did not originate in the recent past but result from repeated compressive re-activation of old, deep-seated crustal fractures and shear zones.
Current seismicity is less active in Adelaide region than Flinders Ranges, where the crust was more intensely fractured during early rifting before 800 Ma. The Mt Lofty-Flinders ranges and adjacent Cenozoic basins are an archetypal example of repeated reactivation of ancient crustal structures.
In the Eocene (~40Ma), renewed compression-initiated subsidence of the St Vincent Basin and complementary uplift of the ranges. Field relationships demonstrate activity on the Willunga Fault under compression since at least the Oligo-Miocene (~30Ma).
Proximal talus, alluvial fans and lacustrine sedimentation accompanied uplift during the Quaternary.
Unknown saline water seepage into freshwater wetland basins in a newly developed Adelaide suburb caused deterioration of freshwater plants. Learn about discovery, investigations and causes.

Dr.Wolfgang Preiss completed his Ph.D. in 1971 and worked in the Geological Survey of South Australia for forty-six years before retiring in 2017. His work concentrated on the Precambrian geology of South Australia, particularly the Neoproterozoic stratigraphy and tectonics of the Adelaide Superbasin and the Palaeoproterozoic-Mesoproterozoic Curnamona Province.
In retirement Wolfgang is an Honorary Research Fellow at Adelaide University and maintains a close relationship with the Geological Survey. He remains active in the Geological Society of Australia, which awarded him the W.R, Browne Medal in February 2026.
