NORM, SCO, LLW??? Amazing Wastes - What They are and Where to Find Them.

Join the virtual discussion on all things naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) and associated materials arising from working with this material.

What is it? Where should we look for it? Why is it an issue for the remediation industry? How is it regulated??? Our experienced presenters will take you through an introduction to these points, provide insights and discuss case studies to illustrate where to look, what to do and what not to do about this type of unique challenge onsite.

Speakers:

Annelize Van Rooyen (Tellus Holdings) has been involved in all aspects of radiation safety and the nuclear fuelcyclefromUranium mining to decontamination, decommissioning and waste disposal. Besides a number of years as fuel and core management technician for the Safari-1 Research Reactor and engineering specialist for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor her main career focus was radiation safety in various facilities and across a number of projects both in South Africa as well as Australia. These included decommissioning and decontamination of offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities; Radiological review and advice on Nuclear facility design; Decommissioning and decontamination of Uranium enrichment facilities;  Waste Recovery Projects; Development of the Thabana Spent Fuel Storage Facility and the subsequent spent fuel transfer campaigns including IAEA Non-proliferation and safeguards involvement; Conditioning of HLW & ILW; Mine site rehabilitation and general Radiation Safety consultancy services to exploration, mining, mineral sands and the oil and gas industries in Australia.

Ross Kleinschmidt (Epic Environmental) has a PhD in the field of environmental health physics. He has worked in the field of ionising radiation in an academic environment, as a regulator with Queensland Health’s radiation legislation administrator, as head of a scientific team of health physicists and radiochemists with Queensland Health, and currently as a radiation specialist consultant with Epic Environmental. Ross has also consulted for the IAEA, Laboratory’s Seiborsdorf, contributing to a number of technical documents for the Agency. He has accumulated a broad spectrum of applied knowledge in areas including radioactive waste disposal and waste store design & operation, decontamination and decommissioning of radiation facilities, contaminated land survey, assessment & remediation, radiation dose reconstruction, and the identification, assessment and management of the impact of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM).
