This event seeks to provide attendees an insight into the careers, rolls/responsibilities and highlights of different practitioners within the Environmental Industry. Attendees will be provided firsthand information on what they might expect in vocations from remediation contractors, laboratories, professional consultants and more. There will also be an opportunity following the event to talk with the presenters one on one.

About the Presenters

 

 

Kate Selvaratnam
Senior Project Consultant
SLR Consulting

 

Kate Selvaratnam is a senior hydrogeologist and environmental engineer, with experience working in global consultancies and state government. Kate’s roles have seen her contribute to nationally significant water availability, mining and contamination projects across the water, transport and Defence sectors. Kate holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) from RMIT University and is currently a Senior Project Consultant in the Hydrology and Hydrogeology team at SLR Consulting


 

Andrew Labbett
Director
Renewal Environmental Consulting

 

Andrew Labbett is an Environmental Engineer with 27 years’ experience specialising in contaminated land assessment and remediation. He has completed projects across the Asia Pacific Region, the USA and the UK.

Andrew has specialised in the delivery of remedial programs, from the conduct of feasibility studies and cost estimation to the remediation strategy design, pilot testing, strategy implementation and site closure. Andrew has worked on a range of retail petroleum sites, chemical manufacturing plants and manufactured gasworks sites.

Coming from a farming background, he takes pride in implementing innovative but practical remediation strategies, and enjoys rolling up his sleeves from time to time where required. He has also taken interest in developing and implementing sustainable remediation technologies and was rewarded with the Inaugural SuRF™ ANZ Sustainable Remediation Project Recognition Award from the Australasian Land and Groundwater Association for his solar thermal recirculation treatment system.

 

 

Dr. John Lucas
Senior Technical Advisor
Ventia

 

With over 30 years’ experience, Dr John Lucas has had a unique and interesting career spanning Academia, Industry and Technology. John has specialist skills, experience and a strong track record in Technology Development, Process Engineering and R&D solutions to difficult challenges, particularly in the waste, manufacturing and resources sector. He prides himself on being very practical and commercially-minded in his approach to working on ‘real world’ problems.

John’s key proficiencies are a deep and thorough understanding of thermal, mass transfer and reaction processes. Being able to apply these key proficiencies in the development and improvement of large scale high temperature processes, in fields as diversified as waste treatment, large scale power generation, metals smelting and direct reduction and all aspects of integrated steelmaking (coke production, molten iron refining, continuous casting, rolling and coating).

 

 

Scott Richardson
Business Development Officer
ALS Environmental

 

Scott is a Business Development Officer for ALS Environmental which is a global Life Sciences company. The Environmental division provides analytical testing to Environmental Consultants and related industries, enabling clients to make sound data-based decisions.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental planning from the University of Waikato in 2015, Scott started his career as a Lab Technician for a large analytical lab in New Zealand. Landing his first scientific role was a big milestone, but he was soon thinking of his next step. Within a year he landed a role in the same organisation as a Key Account Manager for the Horticulture and food market.

Scott has some interesting work stories, from bringing his own iron to his first work related hotel stay, to helping develop the analytical testing market for medicinal cannabis in New Zealand.

 

 

Pacian Netherway
Senior Scientist
EPA Victoria

 

Pacian is an environmental engineer who completed both undergraduate and postgraduate studies at RMIT University. Pacian is currently a senior scientist within the Science Division at EPA Victoria. Before joining EPA Victoria, he worked as an environmental engineer in the contaminated land industry.

 

 

Pete Mercuri
Director of Operations
Matrix Drilling Australia Pty Ltd

 

Pete worked as a hydrogeologist for ten years undertaking site investigation and remediation projects in the contaminated land industry. He is an experienced project manager with skills in field operations, data interpretation, technical report writing and client liaison.

In 2008 Pete started Matrix Drilling, a family business now operating 12 drill rigs across Australia, specialising in the provision of safe, high quality and reliable geotechnical and environmental drilling services to the site investigation industry and resource drilling sector.
