Biotransformation of PFAS in Aqueous Film-Forming Foams

Fire-fighting activities using aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) have caused widespread contamination of per-, and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment. Because polyfluoroalkyl substances account for a significant portion in AFFF formulations, understanding the transformation of these chemicals is crucial for accurately assessing the contamination extent and fate. Dr. Shan Yi will describe her research on using a combination of analytical methods to investigate the biotransformation of a principle PFAS in common AFFF formulations under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. This session will also give you an overview of the current knowledge on PFAS composition found in AFFF formulations, as well as PFAS biotransformation and its implications on site investigation and remediation efforts.

We will conclude the session with audience driven questions and answers. Please email me at elearning@landandgroundwater.com with any detailed aspects of the subject you would like to see addressed.

Shan Yi is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Shan is an environmental biotechnologist. She is interested in investigating the environmental fate of water pollutants and studying the microbial metabolism and interactions in the engineered bioprocesses to remediate and control water pollution. Her current research focuses on investigating the biotransformation and remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to tackle pressing PFAS contamination problems worldwide. Shan obtained her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and her baccalaureate in Biochemical Engineering from Tianjin University in China.
