An Overview of the ANZ Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality
River's Edge Events Melbourne, Level 1, 18/38 Siddeley St, Melbourne VIC 3005
ALGA is pleased to present a technical overview of the updated Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality, as released in 2018. The new water quality guidelines provide the first major update to this guidance since the release of the ANZECC guidance in 2000.
The new guidelines represent some significant changes to the management of water and sediment quality, with a more detailed framework to guide users through the process. Changes have also been made to the methodology for derivation and application of default screening criteria, or default guideline values (DGVs).
The following presenters have been heavily involved in the preparation of the guidance and will provide valuable insight into their development and application:
Rick Van Dam, DoEE – Rick is a technical coordinator and co-author for the guidelines. Rick will discuss the overarching water quality management framework, application of the DGVs to water quality assessment, and the ongoing works to update the guidelines and DGVs.
Kirsten Broadgate, Golder Associates –Kirsten will provide a high level overview (to the extent possible within the time restrictions imposed by the evening forum!) of the derivation methodology for the updated DGVs
Paul Leahy, VicEPA – Paul will be providing insight into our local regulator expectations on the implementation of the updated guidance, and will discuss the general context of the guidance and key considerations from the EPA perspective.
