e-cronicle AI and the Environment

AI and The Environment

CEO Address

This edition of e‑cronicle focuses on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the contaminated land and groundwater industry. While interest in AI continues to accelerate, its practical application in our field remains emerging and requires careful consideration.

To support informed discussion and knowledge sharing in this space, we are pleased to announce the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Specialist Interest Group. This reflects the increasing level of interest across our membership and provides a dedicated forum to explore applications, limitations and good practice in the use of AI.

As these technologies develop, it is important to reinforce that they complement, not replace, professional judgement. Multiple lines of evidence, critical review and human oversight remain fundamental to sound technical practice and decision‑making.

We are also looking to bring e‑cronicle to life by inviting readers to engage directly with our authors. If you have questions or reflections on the articles in this edition, please send them to marketing@landandgroundwater.com. Selected questions will be addressed in future editions.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the strong support from across the industry over the past period, including participation in the Risk Assessment training, and the joint WasteMINZ and ALGA Conference in Wellington. Ongoing engagement across the industry plays an important role in the success of these events and the strength of the broader community.

I hope you enjoy this edition.

– Matt Potter, CEO
