ALGA is inviting you to submit an abstract for the up-coming 2019 EcoForum Conference & Exhibition to be held in Auckland, New Zealand from 3rd - 5th September. Regulatory Updates

We are seeking papers that provide regulatory updates in either Australia or New Zealand, and / or provide new opportunities to identify, manage or remediate land affected by contamination such as:

  • Application of complimentary legal controls such as worksafe acts
  • Developing operational policy to apply existing controls
  • Use of covenants, controls via long-term management plans, use of certificate of title
  • Innovative use of other legislation or legal requirements


Legal & Corporate Issues

We are seeking papers addressing developments in New Zealand and trends emerging from Australia that provide a legal or corporate perspective on contamination risks, how contamination information is processed and responded to, and insights into the legal and cost drivers, including:

  • Risks, mitigation and funding strategies in commercial and  government contexts
  • The insurance & finance sectors' perspectives of contamination risks
  • Communicating risks and responses to senior managers and boards 
  • The role of trust, professionalism and ethics in addressing contamination
  • Understanding contamination in the context of the Treaty of Waitangi


Contaminated Site Investigation

We are seeking papers which will provide overview the current state of the art and best practice for site investigation & risk assessment methodologies including (but not limited to):

  • Vapour intrusion and landfill gas
  • Groudwater and water surface interactions
  • Sediment investigations and assessment
  • Dealing with uncertainty in conceptual site models


Contaminated Site Remediation & Case Studies

We are seeking papers that share & exchange experience on innvovative & smart solutions for land management and/or illustrate lessons learned, such as:

  • Advances in remediation technologies
  • Future trends
  • Managing legacy sites & regeneration projects
  • Managing existing & future liabilities
  • Post treatment monitoring & site management


Emerging & Re-emerging Contaminants

We are seeking papers that address emerging contaminants and the specific challenges they pose, focuses on:

  • Latest developments in the detection
  • Advanced removal and treatment technologies
  • Fate and transport of contaminants
  • Risk Assessment and management
  • Regulatory considerations and legal insights


Social & Communication Issues

We are seeking papers that look at minority perspectives on contaminated land practice – where Aboriginal, Māori, Pasifika, and/or immigrant communities are involved, should be involved, or should have been involved as clients or wider stakeholders, including Treaty of Waitangi issues. 

  • Quadruple bottom line reporting in contaminated land practice
  • Engaging with indigenous stakeholders
  • Cultural drivers in remediation, and cultural constraints on remediation
  • Investigating and assessing contaminants in native ecosystems and//or mahinga kai (traditional food sources)


Future Ready - Innovation & New Technology

We are looking for papers looking beyond the edge of our current norms, such as:

  • New methods to collect site data, including from remote sites

  • Remote sensing techniques e.g. infra-red techniques to detect groundwater/surface water interactions

  • Smarter ways for councils & property owners to manage information about sites

  • Bench top remedial techniques
  • Methods to address pressing issues for the industry, e.g impact of climate change


Poster Session: Research Projects

We are seeking students and researchers to showcase investigations, present findings, and explain the potential benefits to the industry.



Presentation Formats

Oral presentation (20 mins + End of session panel discussion)

Poster presentation (elevator pitch - approx. 5 mins)



How to submit an abstract

Abstracts should be on topic, based on the conference themes, demonstrate the value of the material to the audience and submitted no later than Wednesday 15th May 2019. Given that a large number of abstracts will be received for review, each should be well-written, and clearly and concisely outline the material proposed for presentation. Abstracts with a pronounced commercial or marketing tone will not be accepted. Abstracts that have been presented at other conferences may also not be accepted.

Please click here to submit your abstract via our online abstract management portal. You will not be required to upload a word document as per ALGA's previous conferences, however you are welcome to use the template as a guide (approx 1 x A4 page in length). Then it will simply be 'copy & paste' into the abstract portal. If you have any issues submitting, please contact Shardai Eaton.

What do I need to pay if I am accepted?

Every presenter (oral and / or poster) is required to register as a paying delegate and attend the conference.
If you’re presenting, you are eligible for discounted registration fees. Presenters are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Presenters who do not register will be replaced. You do not need to be a member of ALGA to present, but members receive larger discounts on registration fees and receive other membership benefits. 

What happens next? 

You will be notified whether or not your abstract has been accepted into the program. If it is an accepted presentation (oral or poster), the title will be included in the published preliminary program and the abstract will be published on the event website.
