The Brooklands Green, Cranbourne incident led to a sea change in how development at or near former landfills is regulated in Australia. As development is increasingly located close to former landfills, it’s important that effective investigation, risk assessment and management of ground-gases are carried out.
Drawing on thirty years of UK ground-gas experience the presenters will provide a comprehensive update on latest best practice approaches to investigation, risk assessment and protection using relevant case studies, video content and practical demonstrations.
The presenters demonstrated that developing realistic conceptual site models and building up multiple lines of evidence to inform the design of cost effective management systems is only part of the solution. They will also show that the practical aspects of installation and validation also need to be professionally managed for a project to be successful.
Techniques for the assessment and management of per- and polyfluorocarbons (PFASs) at contaminated sites are developing rapidly and the state of play is changing constantly. In addition, Australian regulatory guidelines have yet to be released, sometimes resulting in confusion regarding the best approach for the management of these chemicals in the environment.
This workshops aim was to:
- Bring together Australian experts from relevant fields to present their understanding of the recent advances relating to these compounds.
- Assist industry to get together to share knowledge and discuss the best way to scientifically approach the assessment and remediation of these chemicals.
Key topics include toxicology, risk assessment, analysis, remediation and fluorotelomers.
This is an introductory geochemistry course for scientists and engineers working in the field of groundwater site characterization, contamination, and remediation.
It is designed to provide basic information on geochemistry that is necessary to understand natural and contaminated systems and how the composition of groundwater evolves along its flowpath in the subsurface.
Geochemical processes that will be described and discussed include solution complexation reactions, solution/gas interactions, mineral dissolution/precipitation, oxidation/reduction, and adsorption/desorption. Data collection, presentation, and interpretation of results will be discussed.
Examples that illustrate the concepts are described throughout the class. At the end of this one-day class, attendees will have a better understanding of the types of geochemical processes that affect groundwater composition, the importance of collecting sufficient data to understand site-specific geochemical systems, and how to use data to evaluate contaminant occurrence and mobility in the subsurface.
