Trials and Tribulations of PFAS Remediation
Allens Level 37, 250 St Georges Terrace, Perth, Western Australia 6000, Australia
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) comprise a group of some 3,000 man-made chemicals that have been used since the 1940’s across a wide range of applications. Because of its unique properties PFAS has been touted as the great emerging contaminant for several years now, it’s topical: there is regular media coverage of contentious sites, the regulators are putting guidance in place, a wide range of industries are now very concerned about how they manage it, and everyone wants to know the best way to remediate!
As we progress PFAS sites through the investigation and risk assessment life cycle into remediation and/or management what are the real demonstrated solutions available in Western Australia and is there stakeholder acceptance? Building upon the ALGA WA February 2018 Waste Containment Forum, this forum will delve into PFAS remediation and management perspectives by the consultant, contractor and regulator.
Peter Storch, Principal Chemical Engineer of Arcadis will present benefits and limitations of technologies as well as challenges and successful outcomes. A case study on the application of an innovative, wastewater PFAS treatment will be presented.
Marika Sallot des Noyers, Remediation Engineer of Menard, to discuss the difficulties they are dealing with on the ground. How they are adapting technologies, processes and systems to deliver the desired outcomes for clients, including the changes required to solidify PFAS contaminated soil and the flexibility of S-PRB for PFAS contaminated groundwater.
Dr Bill Richmond, Contaminated Site Officer of Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, WA – will discuss its perspective on PFAS remediation and site management considerations in the context of the country’s first PFAS National Environmental Management Plan (NEMP).
