Sustainable Remediation – What Does This Involve and How Can We Achieve This?

The concept of sustainability has a very strong presence in the community we all live in – it really is part of the world we live in.

However, it has been uncertain just what “Sustainable Remediation” involves in the development of contaminated land and groundwater. With the recent release of the ISO 18504 (Sustainable Remediation of Contaminated Sites) we now have a clearer picture of what Sustainable Remediation can really involve.

To properly consider Sustainable Remediation, it is important to appreciate the broader context and how Sustainable Remediation fits in within the broader community context of Sustainable Development. Sustainable Development is something that is being driven more and more, building on the work we do in preparing brownfield sites for future development. In particular, developers and infrastructure providers are being driven more and more by the sustainability ratings under the Green Building Council (buildings) and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).

ALGA has developed this specialist training program with the objectives of:

  • Advising on what Sustainable Remediation involves in the contaminated land industry, and how it forms part of the broader program of Sustainable Development that is the focus of major infrastructure providers.
  • What are the key components that a remediation program should involve, if it is to be considered as meeting the requirements for Sustainable Remediation and Sustainable Development, and therefore what auditors and others should be considering when seeking to confirm that a remediation program meets the requirements for satisfying “Sustainable Remediation”.
  • Advising on the potential benefits that considering the requirements for “Sustainable Remediation” can offer.
